Stress Management with Yoga at Santani Wellness Kandy

Stress is not an uncommon factor in daily life, with heavy workloads, constant pressure and technological overload contributing to added stress in life, making us feel disconnected from ourselves. For many individuals seeking relief from stress, yoga has become a key low impact activity, emerging as one of the more powerful holistic methods. At Santani Wellness Kandy, we believe in healing the root cause, and understand the importance of stress management with yoga. In this article, we will explore how yoga helps reduce stress, anxiety, fatigue and increase mindfulness.

Understanding the Connection Between Stress and the Body

Stress affects your body and mind, creating tension, anxiety and fatigue. Stress is a natural reaction in the body, which can be helpful in “flight or fight” situations by releasing hormones such as cortisol and adrenaline. However, when it becomes chronic, stress can lead to feelings of irritability, physical symptoms like muscle tension and serious health conditions such as depression and heart disease.

Some common signs of chronic stress include:

  • Changes in appetite
  • Headaches
  • Digestive issues
  • Constant restlessness or worry
  • Changes in sleeping patterns

Unmanaged chronic stress can cause a lot of harm in the long run, which is why it is essential to practice stress management.

Benefits of Yoga in Stress Management

Through mindful breathing, meditation, and relaxation techniques, yoga offers a powerful way to relieve stress and bring deep calm to both the body and mind.

When practised regularly, yoga:

  • Calms the mind while releasing physical tension
  • Reduces chronic stress, anxiety and depression
  • Eases negative emotions
  • Soothes and regulates the nervous system
  • Improves flexibility and mobility
  • Alleviates bodily pain and muscle tightness
  • Creates space for mental clarity and inner peace
  • Promotes deep physical and mental relaxation
  • Nurtures a lasting sense of inner calm
  • Improve focus
  • Foster better emotional capacity
  • Improve patience

Yoga can be more than simply low impact exercise, it can be your gateway to achieving inner peace and clarity. With time, yoga will not just be a physical activity or stress reliever, but an essential part of your journey to self discovery and peace.

Yoga Practices for Stress Relief

At Santani Wellness Kandy, we believe in a personalised and restorative approach to yoga, with the aim to heal the root cause of stress and anguish. Here are some gentle yoga practices that you can incorporate into your life, to help you deal with chronic stress and anxiety.

  • Breathing Exercises | Pranayama
Incorporate Pranayama such as deep belly or nostril breathing, helping you bring yourself to the present moment, relaxed.
  • Gentle Yoga Poses | Asanas
Certain yoga poses help reduce fatigue and tension in the body.
    • Child’s Pose (Balasana): Kneel and sit on your knees with your buttocks on your heels, and fold forward, extending your arms straight. Breathe deeply, and with each exhalation, stretch yourself further.
    • Seated Forward Bend (Paschimottanasana): Sit on the floor with your legs straight in front, and bend forward at the hips, keeping your back straight, hinging at your hips. Keep your feet flexed and pointed upwards.
    • Legs-Up-the-Wall Pose (Viparita Karani): Lie sideways near a wall, with your knees bent. Swing your legs up onto the wall, forming an L shape. Stay in the position for 10 to 15 minutes.
    • Cat-Cow Stretch (Marjaryasana-Bitilasana): Lie on all fours on your mat, with your hands shoulder-width apart and knees right below your hips. Arch your back as you inhale, raising your head (Cow Pose) and round it as your exhale, tucking your chin to your chest (Cat Pose).
    • Corpse Pose (Savasana): Lie flat on your back with your arms and legs wide apart, and your palms facing upward. Release the tension in your body, one muscle at a time, from head to toe, as you breathe deeply and mentally focus on relaxation.
  • Meditation and Mindfulness
Meditation can be helpful in reducing overthinking, enhancing emotional awareness and providing mental clarity.

Practise yoga 10 to 15 minutes a day, consistently, to experience noticeable benefits.
