An Ayurveda detox is more than just a cleansing process, it’s a personalized journey to heal the root cause of imbalances and restore true vitality. At Santani, this ancient practice is thoughtfully tailored to each guest’s unique needs, offering a comprehensive journey towards wellness.
In this article, our director of brands, Dhyresh Mendis answers some of the most frequently asked questions about Ayurveda detox. From tailored treatments to nourishing meals, this guide explores how Santani redefines Ayurvedic detox for modern lifestyles.

1. How does Santani approach Ayurveda detox?

We see ayurvedic detox as a tool in an arsenal of protocols used to achieve a guest’s wellness goals. It’s not a fad or a trend so we don’t recommend people do detoxes if it doesn’t align with their real needs. Instead, our doctors conduct a full consultation including a diagnosis, doshic constitution and definition of wellness goals combined with blood reports and other relevant medical information. They then design a fully tailored program to meet our guests’ needs. A detox might be part of that program.
Santani offers personalized Ayurveda detox programs tailored to each guest’s unique dosha constitution and wellness goals. Other programs include therapeutic treatments, herbal remedies, dietary adjustments, yoga, meditation, and expert guidance for a comprehensive reset.

2. What is Ayurveda detox, and why is it important?

Ayurveda detox, also known as Panchakarma, is an ancient Indian cleansing process aimed at removing toxins (Ama), rejuvenating internal systems, and restoring balance among the three doshas (Vata, Pitta, and Kapha). It promotes physical and mental well-being by eliminating impurities, stimulating natural repair mechanisms, and harmonizing bodily functions.
The body naturally removes toxins through blood, plasma and lymph filtration. However, these bodily systems evolved alongside very different environmental conditions. Stress stimuli were incidents, creating a spike of cortisol, adrenaline and other “stress” chemicals in the face of danger but return to normal soon after. However, the modern world creates a sustained increase in stress chemicals. This in turn pressures our filtration systems to go from working hard after an incident to working consistently which is not something its had a lot of experience doing as the initial conditions we evolved alongside were different. Ayurvedic detox supercharges the body’s ability to purge toxins (through sweat, urine and stool), giving our filtration systems some much-needed support.

3. What treatments are part of the Santani Ayurveda detox program?

We have a comprehensive catalogue of both ayurvedic and non-ayurvedic treatments, but as mentioned earlier, each individual’s program is fully personalized based on their conditions and goals. If a therapist is performing an Abhyangam on you and finds a muscle knot, they will attempt to resolve it given that’s what you want. We’re more concerned about providing a lasting solution than simply working off a menu. However, here are a few items from our catalogue:

  • Abhyanga: A synchronized oil massage using herbal-infused oils to detoxify and improve circulation.
  • Shirodhara: A relaxing therapy where warm oil is gently poured onto the forehead to induce clarity and relaxation.

4. How does Santani incorporate Ayurvedic principles into meals?

Taste is the primary sense that gets triggered when we eat. Our taste buds send signals to our brain, communicating the flavours it receives. Rasa Haya is an exhaustive ayurvedic classification of flavours – sweet, sour, salty, bitter, pungent, astringent, where each, while recognized through flavour, has a set of physical and mental effects. When the tongue doesn’t feel a particular flavour, it creates a craving for it. Our approach is to provide each flavour in each meal to a degree that both cuts down cravings and provides the nutritional requirements as defined in your consultation.
To complement this philosophy, meals are crafted with seasonal, locally sourced ingredients and tailored to align with your dosha profile. This ensures optimal nourishment and digestion while staying true to Ayurvedic principles, creating a holistic and balanced dining experience.

5. What additional activities support the detox process at Santani?

This question is hard to answer because it makes the assumption that detoxing is the goal. Detoxing is not the goal, it’s a means to being balanced, grounded and energized, which is the goal. To achieve this, we include both group and personal yoga sessions, pranayama sessions, meditation, walks & hikes in our 120 acre estate and the adjoining Knuckles Mountain Range, and where behavioural changes are required, counselling.

6. What are the key benefits of an Ayurveda detox retreat at Santani?

You can sense the strain on your mind and body when you’re in need of detox. It’s impossible to ignore after a point because it pervades everything in your life. You feel like crap when you wake up, you’re irritable, it’s hard to focus, your memory is shot, it’s hard to go to sleep, you swing between overeating and having no appetite whatsoever, and it feels like your body and mind are fighting against you. An ayurvedic detox gets rid of that. Just don’t wait till it gets that bad – it takes a lot of effort to bring someone back from ther. Listen to your body, read the signs and come to Santani.

At Santani, Ayurvedic detoxification offers comprehensive benefits:

  • Physical Health: Deep cleansing, improved digestion, and a strengthened immune system.
  • Mental Wellness: Reduced stress, increased focus, and enhanced emotional stability.
  • Long-Term Wellness: Tools and knowledge for maintaining balance beyond the retreat.

7. What sets Santani’s Ayurveda detox retreat apart from others?

When you come to Santani, you’re there to identify the source of your discomfort or illness, receive curative relief and then transition to a preventative program so you don’t relapse. Everyone else just does a detox. Call us old fashioned but we believe in actually fixing problems.

To support this philosophy, Santani offers:

  • Expert Guidance: Programs are designed by experienced Ayurvedic doctors and wellness specialists.
  • Sustainability: An eco-conscious approach respects the environment while enhancing the guest experience.
  • Luxury Facilities: Serene spas, thermal saltwater pools, and open-air yoga pavilions provide comfort and relaxation.

8. How should one prepare for an Ayurveda detox retreat at Santani?

Before arriving, it helps if our guests collate blood reports and other relevant information from their preferred clinic (our doctors are available on video call after a booking to provide this information). These provide our doctors with additional information for their diagnostics and make the results more tangible for our guests. Additionally, it helps if you really think about the relationship you want to have with your body and mind – this eases the process of defining your wellness goals and roadmap.

Once you’re at Santani, it’s smooth sailing – you check in, have your consultation and then go through the program we design with your input. The team huddles and designs your treatments, your activities, your meals, your schedule, and a host of other things down to how much water is available in your room. We have a minimum stay of 5 nights if you’re doing a detox, but I really recommend 7-14 nights if you want to see exponential results.

9. What essentials should guests pack for the retreat?

Nothing out of the ordinary. Clothing that accommodates yoga, walks and hikes comfortably helps. We provide raincoats and leech socks as required. As I mentioned before, blood reports and other relevant medical documents help!
Additionally, a journal can be a great companion to document your thoughts and progress throughout the journey.

10. Any final words?

Yeah, I don’t think a lot of people are familiar with Ayurvedic detoxes even though they’re definitely picking up popularity over the last couple of decades. There are some parts of the process like purgation and the enema that can be quite uncomfortable if it’s your first time but that’s just because it’s a new experience. Passing stool, urine, and sweating are natural bodily processes that keep our bodies healthy. Seeing these processes as integral to health and vitality is a shift in mindset that first-timers have to make. By your 2nd time, you’re a pro.
